What Is a Super Visa for Canada?
The Canada Super Visa is a temporary resident visa designed for eligible parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents. It allows eligible visitors to stay in Canada for extended periods and provides multiple entries while the visa is valid.
A Super Visa is different from a regular Visitor Visa because it is specifically designed for eligible parents and grandparents and has additional requirements, including financial support from the host and qualifying private medical insurance.
A Super Visa does not provide permanent residence and does not by itself authorize the holder to work or study in Canada.
How Long Can Parents Stay in Canada on a Super Visa?
A Super Visa may allow eligible parents and grandparents to stay in Canada for up to 5 years at a time, while the visa can provide multiple entries for a period of up to 10 years, subject to applicable requirements.
The visa's validity depends on factors such as the applicant's passport expiry date, and the length of each stay is confirmed by the border officer on entry. Not every applicant receives the maximum validity or length of stay.

Who Can Apply for a Super Visa?
The applicant generally must:
- Be the parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or registered Indian
- Be outside Canada when submitting the application
- Meet applicable admissibility requirements
- Complete an immigration medical examination when required
- Obtain qualifying private medical insurance
- Demonstrate that they meet the requirements for temporary residence
Host Requirements
The Canadian child or grandchild hosting the visit must generally:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or registered Indian
- Live in Canada
- Be the applicant's child or grandchild
- Provide a signed invitation letter
- Meet the applicable minimum necessary income requirements
Where applicable, an eligible spouse or common-law partner may co-sign the invitation letter and financial support. The host provides a written promise of financial support; this is not a permanent residence sponsorship.
Super Visa Income Requirement
The host must show enough income to support the visit, based on the applicable family size and IRCC's minimum necessary income requirements. Family size includes the host's household as well as the parents or grandparents being invited.
IRCC updated the income rules in 2026. Families may now demonstrate financial support in more than one way, depending on the host's income history and, in some cases, the visiting applicant's own income.

Super Visa Medical Insurance Requirements
Applicants generally need private medical insurance that:
- Is valid for at least 1 year from the date of entry
- Provides at least $100,000 in emergency coverage
- Covers health care, hospitalization and repatriation
- Meets IRCC's other applicable requirements, including payment and insurer requirements

Parents and grandparents applying for a Super Visa from India must meet the same federal requirements as applicants from any other country. What differs is the practical preparation: families often need to organize Indian financial records, pension or employment documents, property papers and other evidence of ties to India alongside the Canadian host's income and invitation documents.
