Overview

About the LMIA Work Permit

An LMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment) is the federal government's confirmation that hiring a foreign worker won't negatively affect Canadian workers. Once positive, the foreign worker applies for a closed work permit tied to that employer and role.

We coordinate with your employer to prepare the LMIA, then file your work permit and family-accompaniment package — open spousal work permit and study permits for children included.

Eligibility
  • Positive LMIA from Service Canada
  • Genuine job offer at prevailing wage
  • Qualifications matching the NOC
  • Admissibility
Documents
  • Job offer, LMIA (if applicable), proof of qualifications, language test (if required), passports, biometrics

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does an LMIA take?

Standard processing is 2–4 months; high-wage and global talent streams can be faster.

Can my spouse work?

Yes — TEER 0/1/2/3 LMIA permits qualify the spouse for an open work permit.

Does LMIA give CRS points?

Most LMIAs no longer give CRS points (removed in March 2025) — but the Canadian work experience still leads to CEC eligibility.

Can the permit be extended?

Yes — either with a new LMIA or by transitioning to PR (CEC, PNP, AIP).

Is education required?

Only if the NOC requires it.

Can I change employers?

Only by obtaining a new work permit; LMIA permits are closed.
